In 1966, Ford produced several special edition Mustangs to further promote their pony car. One of the
most popular of these packages produced was the Grand Touring package, or GT. The GT package gave
the Mustang owner a better-handling, better-performing car all in one neat package. The 1966 Mustang
GTs were very different from the base model cars and they had many factory modifications that are
hard to duplicate after production.
All GT Mustangs were either a “K” code car or an “A” code car, and this Mustang being a true GT car
comes with the correct A-code 289cid 224hp 4bbl V8. The engine compartment has been detailed and
presents well with aluminum finned Ford valve covers and chrome air cleaner. A Holley carburetor with
electric choke sits atop an aluminum performance intake and the ignition has been upgraded to an
electronic ignition with 8mm spark plug wires. The engine is well maintained with new fan belts and
cooling hoses as well as a new aluminum radiator to help keep this hot set up running cool. Power is
transferred to the rear differential through a 4-speed manual transmission and gears are selected with a
Hurst shifter.
The under body of this car has not been restored although the floorboards have been replaced and sub-
frame connectors to lessen body flex have been installed and the repair work is well executed. The
suspension has been well maintained with new lower control arms, tie rods, idler arm and sway bar links
and HD gas shocks on all four corners. As a true GT this car features a 16:1 quick ratio steering box and
a stiffer suspension and thicker front sway bar. Equipped with front disc brakes and a larger single
master cylinder, and the brake system has been refurbished with fresh brake lines. The performance
exhaust features long tube headers that flow into a 2.5” X-pipe dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers
that exit through a special rear valance openings into chrome trumpeter tips.
The Emberglo paint is well applied over professionally finished body work. The finish has been carefully
polished and shines with a deep luster. Body fit is well aligned, and the panel gaps are even and
consistent. The correct GT badges are on each front fender with white GT stripes running along the
rocker panel, GT gas cap and up front is the correct fog lights. The 15” American Racing Shelby inspired
aluminum wheels nicely accent the GT option.
The black interior has been restored with new seat upholstery, headliner, dash pad and carpet. The dash
has the standard 5 dial analog instrument cluster, and the brake pedal is appropriately labeled “Disc
Brake”. The interior features simulated wood trim on the dash and center console and a billet steering
wheel with walnut rim. The AM radio appears stock but has been upgraded internally to play AM/FM
stereo and features AUX input so you can play music through your phone. The music plays through
speakers mounted in the kick panels up front and rear mounted speakers. Mustang logo floor mats
nicely accent this clean interior.
This car is a real looker that will draw thumbs up as you cruise the strip and will draw lots of attention at
the local cruise ins and car shows. But this GT optioned Mustang is more than a show piece, these cars
are fun to drive, and this car is ready to take you for spirited drives on two lane country roads.
